Book 6 of 2015

When Water Flows UphillWhen Water Flows Uphill by Beryl Shaw
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When Water Flows Uphill by Beryl Shaw captivated me with the title alone not to mention the great cover. Then when I started reading it, it was one of those books I just didn't want to put down. I had to dig deeper into this character and where he worked with one page leading to the next and going deeper into greed, power, lies, and betrayal. Never mind the cover up and moral issues and....and suddenly I thought of drought and what is going on now on the West Coast.

The characters in the book were all developed (Croft since he had amnesia) to make them deep enough for the reader to connect with. I may hate them, I may like them, but the point is I know enough about them to be able to connect in this way. They were not all developed at one time but throughout the book, especially Croft who suffered from amnesia and so at the beginning of the book superficial traits were known but it wasn't until I really got into the story where his true character became known.

The plot is excellent and there are subplots as well. This is a multi-layered story where morals, love, greed, power, terrorist plots, envy, romance, mystery, and I am sure even more come into the story. It seems like a lot but the way it is written, it is not confusing and seems like a normal chain of events. By that I mean nothing seems out of place nor is the story jumping from one 'event' to another and back again. The pace of the story is consistent throughout and although the book is long, it goes by fast.

I really loved this story and recommend it to anyone.
